Sophia-FOUNDER emeritus
Sophia Brubaker founded the Barn for Artistic Youth in 2003, she currently assists with the high school art classes, and advises all senior portfolio students. Sophia has been a K-12 certified art teacher for over 36 years and has taught art in public schools in Minnesota, Alaska, and Connecticut.
Sophia earned her BA at Wesleyan University in studio art and art teaching in 1982 and earned her Masters in Art Education at the Rhode Island School of Design in 2003. Sophia’s graduate work at RISD focused on partnerships between public school and community arts programs and prompted the creation of the Barn for Artistic Youth in Niantic. The BAY opened its doors with the mission to provide quality art education to emerging artists in southeastern Connecticut. The BAY programs are an outgrowth of Sophia’s RISD experience and personal educational philosophy. Sophia believes that the skills and satisfaction achieved through hands-on art education will never lose its appeal and importance and are becoming more relevant in an increasingly technological and virtual world. Sophia has dedicated her life to helping young people develop lifelong skills in the processes of “making art,” and future opportunities in the field of art. |
